5-Minute Rituals for Stress Relief

Some days, five minutes is all it takes to find your way back. Not to fix everything — just to remember yourself. Here’s the simple reset ritual I return to when the day gets heavy.

There are days when it all piles up. The messages, the to-do list, the mental noise. And somewhere in the middle of it, I lose the thread back to myself.

I used to push through. Now, I pause.

Not for an hour. Not for a retreat. Just five minutes. It’s enough.

Why Small Resets Work

We often think self-care requires time we don’t have. But the nervous system doesn’t need a spa day to regulate — it needs a signal. A small, intentional act that says: we’re safe, we can slow down.

Five minutes, done with presence, can shift everything.

My 5-Minute Reset Ritual

1. Stop and breathe (1 minute) Put down whatever you’re doing. Four counts in, hold for four, out for four. Repeat four times. This alone changes your state.

2. Light a candle (30 seconds) The act of lighting a candle is a physical full stop. It marks a boundary between the chaos and this moment. Watch the flame for a few breaths. Let it anchor you.

3. Ask yourself one question (1 minute) “What do I actually need right now?” Not what’s on your list. Not what others need from you. Just you, honestly. Write it down if you can.

4. Move your body (1 minute) Roll your shoulders. Stretch your neck. Stand up and shake out your hands. Tension lives in the body — give it somewhere to go.

5. One thing of beauty (1.5 minutes) Look at something that brings you quiet joy. A plant, a crystal on your desk, a photo, the sky outside your window. Let your eyes rest there. Let yourself feel it.

Coming Home

You don’t need to fix everything in five minutes. You just need to find yourself again.

That’s what these small rituals do — they’re not escapes. They’re returns.

If you’re building your own reset practice, the tools on your desk matter. A candle that smells like calm. A journal within reach. A palm stone to hold when words don’t come. These aren’t luxuries — they’re anchors. Find yours at Senseful Crafts.

What does your reset look like? Share in the comments — I’d love to know.

Finding Connection Through Mindfulness: A Personal Journey

The author reflects on the complexity of loneliness, emphasizing that it can arise even in a crowd. Mindfulness teaches acceptance of these feelings, revealing them as a call for deeper connection and self-honesty. By embracing stillness and personal presence, the sense of loneliness softens, fostering a deeper understanding of oneself.

It happens more than I’d like to admit. I’m surrounded by people — laughter, conversation, familiar faces — and yet, somewhere inside, I feel completely alone.

It used to confuse me. Now, I think I understand it a little better.

Loneliness isn’t always about being alone

Sometimes it’s about feeling unseen, even in a full room. It’s the gap between the version of yourself you’re showing the world and the one quietly sitting inside you, waiting to be acknowledged.

That gap is real. And feeling it? That’s actually a sign of awareness.

What mindfulness taught me

Mindfulness doesn’t ask you to fix the feeling. It asks you to sit with it.

When I stopped trying to shake off the loneliness and started getting curious about it, I noticed something: it always had something to tell me. Maybe I was craving deeper connection. Maybe I was exhausted from performing. Maybe I just needed to come home to myself.

Loneliness, I’ve learned, is often the inner self way of asking for honesty.

The quiet way back

I don’t always need more people. Sometimes I need more presence — a slow breath, a quiet moment, a candle lit with intention.

When I return to myself, the loneliness softens. It doesn’t always disappear. But it becomes something I can hold, rather than something that holds me.

And in that stillness, I find I am never truly alone.

Have you ever felt this way? I’d love to hear your thoughts below.

The Oxygen Mask Principle: Why Self-Care Matters

Learn why putting yourself first isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Discover the oxygen mask principle and practical ways to prioritize your wellbeing so you can show up fully for others.

We’ve all heard the airplane safety instruction: in case of emergency, put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. It’s practical advice for survival at 30,000 feet. It is also one of the most profound lessons for living a sustainable, compassionate life on the ground.

Yet so many of us resist this wisdom. We pour ourselves into caring for others—family, friends, colleagues, and communities. We keep going until we’re running on empty. We wonder why we feel depleted, resentful, or burned out.

The truth is simple but often uncomfortable: you cannot give what you don’t have. And trying to save others while neglecting yourself isn’t noble—it’s unsustainable.

The Cost of Self-Neglect

When we consistently prioritize others’ needs over our own, we pay a price. Exhaustion becomes our baseline. Stress accumulates. Joy fades. We become less patient, less present, less effective in the very roles we’re trying to fulfill.

In Singapore’s high-pressure culture, this pattern is especially common. We’re taught to work hard, sacrifice for family, and push through discomfort. Self-care can feel selfish or indulgent. It can seem like something we’ll get to “later.” We plan to address it when things slow down. We will do it when we’ve achieved enough. It happens when everyone else is okay.

But later never comes. And meanwhile, we’re running on fumes.

Reframing Self-Care

Saving yourself first isn’t selfish—it’s strategic. It’s recognizing that your wellbeing is the foundation. It underlies everything else you want to do and everyone you want to support.

Think of it this way: you are the well from which others drink. If the well runs dry, no one benefits. But when you tend to the well—filling it with rest, nourishment, joy, and presence—there’s abundance to share.

Self-care isn’t about bubble baths and spa days (though those can be lovely). It’s about the daily, unglamorous work of meeting your own needs. This includes getting enough sleep, eating well, and moving your body. It also involves setting boundaries, asking for help, and creating space for stillness.

Practical Ways to Save Yourself First

1. Start Your Day for You
Before you check messages, emails, or dive into others’ needs, give yourself 10-15 minutes. Light a candle, sit in silence, journal, or simply breathe. This small act signals that your wellbeing matters.

2. Set Boundaries Without Guilt
Saying no to others is saying yes to yourself. You don’t need to justify every boundary. “I’m not available” is a complete sentence. Protect your time and energy like the precious resources they are.

3. Check In With Yourself Daily
Ask: What do I need right now? Am I hungry, tired, overwhelmed, lonely? Treat yourself with the same care and attention you’d offer a loved one. Use a journal to track patterns and honor your needs.

4. Create Non-Negotiable Rituals
Identify 1-2 practices that restore you—meditation, walking, reading, creative time—and make them non-negotiable. Schedule them like important meetings. Your wellbeing is that important.

5. Release the Guilt
You are not responsible for everyone’s happiness, success, or comfort. You can care deeply and still prioritize your own needs. In fact, you must. Let go of the belief that your worth is measured by how much you sacrifice.

The Ripple Effect

Here’s what happens when you save yourself first: you show up more fully. You have more patience, clarity, and energy. You model healthy boundaries for others. You become a source of genuine support rather than resentful obligation.

Your children learn that self-care is normal, not selfish. Your friends see that it’s okay to prioritize wellbeing. Your colleagues witness sustainable work habits. The people around you benefit not despite your self-care, but because of it.

Tools to Support Your Journey

At Senseful Crafts (www.sensefulcrafts.com), we create tools to anchor your self-care practice. We offer candles to mark sacred pauses. Our journals are for reflection. We provide crystals for grounding. Meditation malas are available to guide your breath. Each piece is a reminder that tending to yourself is not optional; it’s essential.

Your Permission Slip

If you’ve been waiting for permission to prioritize yourself, here it is: You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to put yourself first without explanation or apology.

Not because you’ve earned it through endless sacrifice, but because you’re human. Because your wellbeing matters. Because you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Save yourself first. Care for yourself not instead of caring for others. This way, you can care for them sustainably and joyfully. You will be doing so from a place of abundance rather than depletion.

The oxygen mask principle isn’t just for emergencies. It’s for every single day.

Mother’s Day Wishes to all!

I do not believe in restricting the Mother’s Day wishes to those who are already mothers. This wish applies to all who takes on the role of a lead, guide and support to anyone.

Lastly, I would like to thank our Mother Earth that has always been doing her work for all of us. Let us take this opportunity to remember her too.

Have a great day!

Best Wishes, Esther

“Flow with whatever may happen, and let your mind be free:
Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing.
This is the ultimate”.
~ Zhuangzi

Reflection by Esther
Go with the flow!
That will be the best advice that one needs to have in any given situation. Resistance is going to make things worse for an individual and the people surrounding him. Rather than going against, “flow” into any circumstance and be at ease. It is better to “flow” and accept the moments. Once we have learnt how to live our lives in that way, nothing can dampen our spirits and the life we live.

Reflection by Esther
How we view life or a particular situation is entirely up to us. No one can change the way we think of something unless we ourselves allow it to happen. Rather than looking at something, someone or a situation as negative and a hindrance, why don’t we step aside and look at ways on how we can learn or benefit from it. We all have to remember that anything negative that is taking place in our life is not permanent. Everything will pass at ease if we allow our thoughts to change accordingly. We must always see every situation in our life an opportunity to advance further. We must never let a bad situation drive us to darkness, depression and negativity.

…there is still hope…and every single hope begins with each one of us…

Daily, all of us are receiving news of the coronavirus and how the numbers are increasing around the world. While this is no easy news to digest, this is also not the time to discriminate against a group of people and/or country. In this difficult time, all of us must be calm and positive. We should make a point to turn all negative energy into positive energy through prayers, compassion and thoughtfulness.

Below are various articles on suggestions as to how we can better manage the current crisis. Let us all come together as one united family to assist each other in this difficult time.

Amid “darkness” and confusion over the virus, there is still hope…and every single hope begins with each one of us.

Love & Peace,
Esther

Graduation in Our Daily Life

My workplace is located at a University Campus. During late June and July, the scene of the University grounds changes to that of graduation, plenty of posing for photos in the graduation gowns, with friends and family, happy moments, etc. Graduation or other words, upgrading to the next level is not only restricted to students who are studying. It is also applicable to all of us too. In our daily life, we are always learning – learning from experiences, relationships, emotions, feelings and more. Therefore, should we not be graduating too? Yes! Definitely.

Just like how a student goes through his difficulties in his education term, we too experience that in our daily life. Each day, we become newer and wiser with our experiences. We also must celebrate our graduation from our good old self to our better self. Past mistakes, regrets and negative attributes – who does not have it? On and off we need to reflect upon our past self and congratulate our new self…

If we do this regularly, we would have plenty of reasons to love our new self and embrace new beginnings (or openings) in our life…

Happy daily graduation everyone!

Celebrate our existence…

Today I celebrate my entrance into this world (that is my birthday). I take this time to wish anyone celebrating their birthdays on this day and for the month of January. And of course, wishing “Happy Birthday” to myself too! 🙂

Most importantly, I thank everyone (including the “Big Boss”, the Creator) who has and will be part of my life always…

Esther Birthday Cake from Awfully Chocolateawfully chocolate cake

Why wait for the world or someone to celebrate your existence? Always be in the celebration mood – and what else is better than each one of us to celebrate ourselves, our purpose and our living? When we truly understand and appreciate ourselves and our existence it will be easy to find and see beauty all around us. Nothing in the world is perfect – including us. I do not believe in waiting for something to be “perfect” to celebrate. It is important to celebrate when there are imperfections too. After all, each one of us is unique. Each one of us possesses certain qualities due to various reasons, according to our life purpose and/or life path.

Therefore, do not wait for a special occasion to celebrate yourself…you can begin now and you can do it on a daily basis…

birthday quote

“A child is born on that day, and at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with his individual Karma. His horoscope is a challenging portrait, revealing his unalterable past and its probable future result. But the natal chart can be rightly interpreted only by men of intuitive wisdom – These are few…”

My life is like a dandelion…

life-cycle-dandelion-9350001

My life is like a dandelion.

Why do I compare my life to a dandelion? I am sure that there many other things out there than just dandelions? Yes! Definitely. A dandelion brings out feelings of freedom, emotional release and more. It is more like a “release” feature than to hold.

BBC.com describes the life cycle of dandelions (https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/clips/zhrb4wx),

“A look at the life cycle of a dandelion including wind-aided seed dispersal. Once fertilisation has taken place the plant will produce seeds. Plants such as dandelions often use wind to transport seeds. Each dandelion seed comes with its own individual parachute. This device works very well and only a slight wind will carry seeds high into the sky. As there are so many adult plants in one place there is no space for the next generation of plants to grow. The dandelion therefore needs the wind to carry the seeds far away. New plants are formed and the whole process starts again.”

Website, “Flower Meaning.com” describes dandelions and its symbolism beautifully.

http://www.flowermeaning.com/dandelion-flower-meaning/

What Does the Dandelion Flower Mean?

The common and humble Dandelion has a surprising amount of different meanings. The Dandelion means:

  • Healing from emotional pain and physical injury alike
  • Intelligence, especially in an emotional and spiritual sense
  • The warmth and power of the rising sun
  • Surviving through all challenges and difficulties
  • Long lasting happiness and youthful joy
  • Getting your wish fulfilled

Since the Dandelion can thrive in difficult conditions, it is no wonder that people say the flower symbolizes the ability to rise above life’s challenges.”

And no wonder I prefer dandelions!

I have encountered and survived many difficulties in my life. I am at my present stage of my life here because of my hard work. There were no short cuts offered to me. All was with hard work sprinkled with determination and courage. After surviving so many ordeals in my life, on and off I feel lack of self-worth and self-confidence. I realise feelings of self-love and self-worth has to continue in any person as long as one lives. You cannot put a brake on those. Over the years, there were many occasions when my determination and courage was tested. I managed to get through those. The one thing I failed in the past is to take good care of myself! I took care of others, their needs and their future – but I did not do anything for myself specially and thoughtfully. At the same time, I know that it is no use blaming others. The truth is that I should not blame anyone for the negative feelings or emotions I have created in my life.

A quote by Nicole Bailey-Williams puts it beautifully,

“I was a dandelion puff…Some saw the beauty in me and stooped quietly to admire my innocence. Others saw the potential of what I could do for them, so they uprooted me, seeking to shape me around their needs. They blew at my head, scattering my hair from the roots, changing me to suit them. Yet still others saw me as something that was unworthy and needed to be erased.”

I also found a beautiful YouTube video of the life cycle of a dandelion by Neil Bromhall. View it to enjoy the transformation.
